150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railway - the Golden Spike
One of the most iconic and life-altering events in America’s history – the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on July 1st, 1862, and completed in 1869, the approval and building of a “Transcontinental” railroad dramatically changed the future of our nation and brought us together through “two thin ribbons of steel”. Thousands of workers worked tirelessly to lay these tracks. The railroad carved tunnels into mountain and spanned bridges across rivers. This achievement is a true reflection of the American spirit. This project involved two companies, Union Pacific and Central Pacific. Although most of the companies' railroad workers were initially from Ireland and Union Pacific employed some native-born American soldiers, the vast majority of workers for Central Pacific were Chinese immigrants by the time the railroad was finished. These immigrants faced particularly poor working conditions and fierce discrimination, but their efforts were crucial to the construction of the railroad and to the full development of the West.
